Holmes on Eden Review

In early to mid October 2011, my wife was scheduled to have surgery at University of Cincinnati Hospital, with a planned stay of several days in the ICU after surgery. For that reason, I needed a place to stay, and was forced (due to homecoming weekend at UC) to seek accomodations other than standard hotels within walking distance of the hospital. As it turned out, Holmes on Eden was my only option. When I went looking for reviews of Holmes, I found next to nothing besides some message board postings. So, here’s my review in hopes that it will be of use to someone, somewhere.

Holmes on Eden is located on the third floor of the Holmes Hospital on the University of Cincinnati medical campus. The third floor was obviously a functioning hospital floor at one time, with each room a remodeled/renovated hospital room. The doors are about five feet wide (to allow hospital beds to move freely), but otherwise the rooms are set up like a standard hotel room; bed, dresser, television with VCR (how nostalgic), alarm clock, and even a mini fridge in each room. The bathroom amenities (specifically the bathing setup) range from standard tub with shower to single stall showers without a tub. My particular room had the full bathtub, but it had a hand held showerhead, as well as the standard wall mounted one. Before I forget, wifi is also available, but it’s the UC Hospital Guest wifi. I didn’t have any problem getting online in my room, though. But the filters on their routers are pretty strict, so any blog with questionable content may get blocked. However, if you take your internet device over to the atrium by the Subway, you can sign on to the UC college wifi, and I couldn’t tell that they had any blocking filters there.

As far as location, short of staying in a room next to my wife’s, this was just about perfect. Here are some helpful suggestions for anyone staying at the Holmes because a loved one is in the hospital at UC. When you are headed over for visiting hours and coming from the hotel, you should proceed a short distance up Eden. You’ll come to some granite steps that lead to a door; that’s the way to go into the building. (There is a Subway just inside that door, and I highly recommend their breakfast sandwiches.) Now, to get to the hospital, head off to the right. You will work your way through the building, past some study bungalo’s (probably in use by UC med students), then you will pass the UC College of Medicine bookstore. Keep heading in that direction, and eventually you will end up in the basement of the UC Hospital. Stay in that hallway until you can’t go straight ahead anymore, then hang a left. I believe your second or third right after that will be the elevators that will take you to any floor in the hospital.

As for food within walking distance of the Holmes, the aforementioned Subway is always good. If you happen to be in the hospital at the end of visiting hours (9pm) and are forced to exit through the emergency department, go out those doors and to the left. When you get to the street (I forget the name of it), take a right and go to the light at MLK. Directly across from you will be a Chipotle that has the best burrito bowls around. If you prefer fast food, there’s a McDonalds to the west about two blocks. There is also a mini Kroger of the ground floor of the building next to the hospital. I don’t know the address, but if you go out the main entrance, the next building to the right has the Kroger.

The ladies who worked the office were incredible. Anything I needed, they were more than willing to help with. Extra blankets and towels were no problem at all, and they even let me get a second room for a night when my stepson came up. Very nice, and very helpful when needed. The rooms are relatively cheap ($40 a night), and the location is perfect if all you want is a room close to a loved one in the hospital. My experience there was very positive, even given the circumstances. I’d be happy to stay there again, and would recommend it to anybody looking for a place to stay close to the UC Hospital.
